Live free or die is its motto. A faction of the Libertarian Party chose it as a place to send 20,000 people to create a 'free state.' New Hampshire prides itself on its free, independent spirit. In fact, it has more Libertarians in public office than any other state. All of this talk about freedom and Independence inspires visitors to get outside and be free. Fortunately, the state is also a four season outdoor playground. The state is known as the birthplace of modern skiing. That said, it's interesting to note that while many of the resorts have modern features, they still manage to keep their authentic charm. Bretton Woods is a prime example. The resort is characterized by its meticulously groomed slopes, long intermediate runs and stunning views of the Mount Washington Hotel. There's a Sunday morning Christian service at the mountain chapel. After the service, participants ski down the mountain singing 'How Great Thou Art.' Those on a tight budget will want to visit the smaller, privately owned ski areas, such as Black Mountain and Mount Cranmore. Cranmore is known for its night skiing. Visit on a Saturday night for Cranapalooza, which features skiing, riding, fireworks and entertainment. Stay at a local mountain lodge, and limit your driving time to the slopes. Mount Sunapee is a state-owned ski area. However, it is managed by the Muellers, of Okemo Mountain fame. It's a fantastic area for novice skiers, and boasts a friendly, old fashioned ambiance. Since Mount Sunapee is not a commercial resort it does not have on-mountain lodging. However, there are some lovely bed and breakfasts and country inns within a ten-minute drive to the mountain. While the state is popular for its skiing, it boasts a variety of other activities. Even those who are not fans of the great outdoors enjoy the massive number of outlet stores in North Conway. Consider a farmhouse or cottage stay to experience authentic New England cooking. For hiking, the trails near Jackson and Jackson Village offer unlimited options. You can choose from a number of quaint bed and breakfasts. If you like to dress for dinner, find an elegant Victorian inn with an impressive dining hall. Eat well! If you are planning a morning hike up Franconia Notch, you will need the fuel!
