Missouri is home to a variety of attractions that will appeal to those in search of the unusual, the unique or the just plain weird. For example, in Independence, you can visit Leila's Hair Museum, which is housed in the Victorian Hairwork Society. Laugh if you will, but hair art was a popular craft amongst Victorian women. After brushing their hair, they would clean their brushes and place the stray hairs into a ceramic hair jar, which would be conveniently located on their dressing table. Eventually, it was combined with dried flowers, beads and ribbons, and turned into works of art. In some cases, hair wreaths were made in commemoration of a recently deceased person. Although hair art is now a dying craft, Leila Cohoon has immortalized it at her museum. As long as you're viewing Victorian hobbies, why not get into the turn-of-the-century spirit, by finding accommodations at a Victorian inn or bed and breakfast. The exploration of odd attractions does not end in Independence. Moving on to Point Lookout, you will discover the Ralph Foster Museum. The museum is located on campus of the College of the Ozarks, which is a private Christian school, and is often referred to as 'The Smithsonian of the Ozarks,' The museum boasts a 1921 Oldsmobile truck, which was used in the original Beverly Hillbillies TV series. For attractions of titanic proportion, head to Branson to visit Titanic: the World's Largest Museum Attraction. The exhibit features a replica of the front half of the ship, as well 400 artifacts from the original ship. If you've ever had the strange desire to take a tram ride through a cave, you need to visit Fantastic Caverns. Located in Springfield, Missouri, this attraction represents the union of an educational experience with a fun-filled ride. Now, for something completely different: Are you one of those people that collect Precious Moment Statues? If so, Carthage, Missouri will be a destination of choice. The city is home to the Precious Moments Inspirational Park, which features a replica of the Sistine Chapel, complete with cartoons of Precious Moments characters interpreting the bible. Continue your fascination with the cute and quaint by staying at a charming B&B. Finally, Saint Louis boasts an award-winning zoo, the Cathedral Basilica, which is home to hundreds of beautiful mosaics and the scenic Botanical Gardens.
