The Natural State, named for its spectacular natural beauty
and outstanding mountain scenery, is also known for its blues music,
cotton fields, exquisitely crafted quilts, Ozark Mountain folk music,
and Arkansas River Valley wine country, as well as its restorative
thermal springs. Once a major trading post, Little Rock made headlines
in 1957 when the Governor and local segregationists violently resisted
attempts to desegregate one of its high schools. Now, the city is known
for catfish and microbrews, as well as its many museums and the new
Clinton Presidential Library. For almost two centuries the Hot Springs
area has attracted visitors with its mineral-rich spas and baths, and
historic hotels add to the town’s unique character. In the mountainous
northwestern part of the state, the Ozark National Forest offers hiking
and mountain biking trails, waterfalls, fascinating underground cavern
tours, and camping opportunities. In the summer months, quaint Eureka
Springs draws Christians to its Great Passion Play and Bible Museum,
which houses over 6000 Bibles. Local culinary specialties include sweet
tea, hushpuppies, pies, and fried green tomatoes, and each October the
Great American SPAM Championship takes place at the Arkansas State Fair
in Little Rock. Lodging can be found at lakeside inns, cozy cottages,
ranches, and vacation houseboats or 'floating hotels.' Camping is a
popular option for families, and couples will enjoy romantic getaways in
rustic 'honeymoon' cabins. B&Bs in grand Victorian mansions and restored
historic homes provide gracious accommodation in a state proud of—and
known for—its hospitality traditions.
